![]() ![]() You do realize that it was entirely basil's idea & execution to hang the body, right? sunny immediately shut down and went into white space after carrying mari's body into her bed and realizing that she wasn't breathing. Sunny is also solely responsible for everything and it is because of sunny that basil got involved in that tragedy. the best thing for basil is therapy and medication, not rotting away in juvie. bad, and comes across as more of a need to punish him for his actions than an actual investment in seeing him grow and change. Ultimately, i think the notion that a deeply mentally and emotionally unstable 16 year old with untreated ptsd and psychosis needs to be locked up to prevent him from hurting people is. it wasn't healthy, but it doesn't mean that basil was inherently evil or needed to be put down. sunny's refusal to speak with basil caused this unhealthy attachment to only expand with time, like a poisonous growth. he fixated on sunny as the only person capable of forgiving him, of absolving him of his crime, the only person who could understand what they've been through. It's so much more of a nuanced situation than just "sunny is completely innocent and basil is an evil manipulator." basil made a mistake - a terrible, awful mistake, but still a mistake - and spent four years struggling with the trauma of it completely alone and isolated. did he do it out of a misguided need to protect sunny while in an extremely unstable emotional state? also yes. was his response to mari's death completely inappropriate and horrific? yes. This is a really weird take on things, imo. ![]() Yeah, they're both very traumatized, have both shown warning signs of mental disorders even before the incident, and need a lot of therapy, but to me Basil is the type of psychopathic unstable that needs to be locked up before he hurts someone. No, He Straight-Up tries to murder Sunny by strangulation and stabs his eye out with garden shears when he struggles. When the second incident happened in Basil's room, he doesn't just try to convince Sunny to commit suicide with him in a way that Sunny can talk him down from. While Sunny chose to go into self-imposed isolation over what he did, Basil was still trying to live his life like normal. For example: after the accident it was Basil's idea to stage the suicide while Sunny was busy having a mental breakdown and was barely aware of what was going on. I mean, Sunny's story makes him out to be almost as much a victim of circumstance as Mari, but Basil is personally responsible for most of the things that happen to him.
